How to Pack 10 Days in 1 Carry-On

I've touched on the subject of packing in previous travel posts, but with the holidays around the corner, I thought it would be helpful to expand on <i>exactly</i> how I pack enough stylish outfits for 10 days...in a single carry-on bag!<br /><br />You guys know we're budget travelers <i>(tips on that <a href="http://hisugarplum.blogspot.com/2011/07/travel-q-part-1.html" target="_blank">here</a>)</i>, which means no one is hauling our bags for us, therefore we travel light! Granted, traveling for the holidays likely isn't the same as two weeks in Europe, but the simpler the better in our book!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="Hi Sugarplum | How to Pack 10 Days in 1 Carry On" height="800" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3946/15535101821_e453620453_c.jpg" width="550" /></div><br />First, you must start with a good bag...I love this <a href="http://izea.it/lzxv" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Atlantic 21-inch Compass Unite</a> because of all the zippered compartments, built-in wet pocket, sturdy base, and easy to maneuver wheels. There are also extra clips for attaching other bags, and comfortable, padded handles. When hopping off and on trains and escalators, you want a bag that is light and transports easily.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="Hi Sugarplum | How to Pack 10 Days in 1 Carry-On" height="714" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3936/15351631407_f8e92baa59_b.jpg" width="550" /></div><br />So first we'll start with what to pack. I believe it takes as much effort to dress like a schlep, as it does to throw on something cute. <i>(Don't misunderstand, of course I own and wear clothing that should never see the light of day. I just don't bring them on trips where a camera is always out!)</i> Shift dresses, skirts with tshirts, well-fitting jeans and cardigans are just as comfortable as sweatpants. And by adding gel insoles and/or good quality wool socks, my wedge boots, flats, and tennies are actually more comfortable than athletic shoes.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><b>{What to Pack}</b></div><br />Choose neutral pieces, and keep them within the same color palette so everything mixes and matches, as well as layers. Weather can be unpredictable, so layering is key. {Big Box Bathroom} Day 3

I spent the weekend spackling, sanding and painting in this little bathroom....which didn't feel so little after the 187th hole I filled....and I can't wait to show you guys how it looks. But, we're documenting each step in order, so that will have to wait! When we left off after <a href="http://hisugarplum.blogspot.com/2014/10/big-box-bathroom-day-2.html" target="_blank">Day 2</a>, the bathroom had been completely demoed, ceiling painted, recessed lights and fan installed, toilet hole dug deeper, vanity sprayed and shower tile partially in place! Whew! You see why we called in the pros for these steps?! Mr. SP and I aren't about to mess with plumbing and electrical!<br /><br />So here we are after Day 3....the shower tile fully installed and grouted <i>(we used Delorian Gray grout)</i>, and the window framed. The room is long and narrow too, so we placed the pattern on the horizontal to make the room appear wider. {Halloween DIY} Skull Bookends

Whew! That was a much-needed weekend! It felt so good to step away from work and responsibilities, and just have fun! This weekend was all about my son's Science Fair project <i>(which involved dry ice and a fog machine!)</i> and finally picking out costumes. Basically, whipping them up in a Halloween frenzy! I hope yours was equally fun and relaxing.<br /><br />A few weeks ago, when I was picking up <a href="http://hisugarplum.blogspot.com/2014/09/cool-tip-ikea-ribba-hack.html" target="_blank">my $2 custom mats</a> at Michaels, I spotted giant plaster skull heads...which of course got me thinking of project ideas.<i> (That's totally normal behavior for a home blogger, Mom, no cause for concern.) </i>I immediately thought of <a href="http://hisugarplum.blogspot.com/2012/02/diy-animal-bookends.html" target="_blank">my elephant bookends</a>, and wondered if I could do something similar.<br /><br />So I texted <a href="http://www.huntedinterior.com/" target="_blank">Kristin</a> to see if it would be too weird to cut a head in half. Because using a skull, and cutting a skull, are two different things. When she didn't accuse me of being Dexter, I proceeded. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="Hi Sugarplum | DIY Skull Bookends" height="760" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3936/14938196513_4302794dfb_b.jpg" width="550" /> </div><br />Fortunately, my contractor was around that day <i>(I know, I know, I owe you a <a href="http://hisugarplum.blogspot.com/search/label/big%20box%20bathroom%20remodel" target="_blank">Big Box Bathroom</a> update!! It's coming tomorrow!)</i>, and he slapped that skull on his fancy-pants saw, and cut it right down the middle. This part did kind of creep me out a bit...watching the blade come down on the head, with his thumb stuck through the eye socket!! I might have turned away. And no, my rockstar-contractor didn't think I was strange. He's used to me and my ideas. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="Hi Sugarplum | DIY Skull Bookends" height="531" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5609/15555696931_efb2311560_z.jpg" width="550" /></div><br />The plaster cut like butter <i>(even a hand saw would do the trick)</i>, and I sanded down any uneven edges. I thought about spraying them...but decided I love the white just the way it is. The Friday Five

I'm not going to lie, this week kicked my bootie a bit. Between the fourth quarter crunch at work, and Mr. Sugarplum working late nights <i>(and obsessed with playoff baseball #gogiants!)</i>, I'm feeling stretched a little thin. It wasn't my best mom-week, that's for sure. But everyone ate three meals a day, had clean clothes, and completed homework, so I wasn't a complete bust. So hooray for Friday, which means I have the whole weekend to recharge and spend time with them! Date Night Style, Vol 2

He'd probably like me to tell you it took a lot of persuading and 'favors' on my part. But it really didn't. A Halloween Mantel

Along with the <a href="http://hisugarplum.blogspot.com/2014/10/stylish-halloween-bash.html" target="_blank">festive set-up</a> for <a href="http://hisugarplum.blogspot.com/2014/10/stylish-halloween-bash.html" target="_blank">our Halloween shindig</a>, we've added a few additional touches of the holiday around the house. Some years I go all out with seasonal or holiday decor...a 'more is more' mentality. But occasionally, I go through a minimalist period...usually associated with feeling overextended in my day-to-day life...so I scale everything back in attempt to stay <strike>partially</strike> sane. I'm in one of those 'plate too full' seasons, so I focused my energy on just the mantel.
